The city of Lakes, Udaipur is a lovely blend of water, lush green hills that set fire and passion in poet. Its palaces are straight out of a fairy-tale book, lakes, temples, gardens and narrow lanes lines withdrawn with stalls, relives the reminisces of a heroic past, valor and chivalry. Their reflection in the placid waters of the Lake Pichhola is excitement that defines imagination.

Udiapur is the citadel of Mewar - a kingdom ruled by the Sisodia dynasty for 1200 Years. The foundation of the city has an interesting legend to go with it. According to it, Maharana Udai Singh, it's founder, was hunting one day when he came upon a holy man meditations on a hill overlooking the Lake Pichhola.

The hermit blessed the Maharana and directed him to build a palace at this spot which had a fertile valley watered by the stream, a lake, an agreeable altitude and an amphitheater of low mountains. Maharana following the divine advise founded the city in 1559 A.D.

Now the City palace stand with it's full glory overlooking the aquamarine expanses of the Lake Pichhola. The walled city had eleven gates of which now only gates remain. The Suraj Pol the original or Sun Gate on the eastern side is the main entrance to the city.

Places to Visit

City Palace
A majestic architectural marvel towering over the lake on a hill surrounded by crenellated walls, it is a conglomeration of courtyards, pavilions, terraces, corridors, rooms and hanging gardens. The main entrance is through the triple arched gate, the ‘Tripolia’ with eight marble porticos. The Maharana were weighed under the gate in the gold, the equivalent amount of which was distributed among the populace. The museum in the palace articulates it's history and is an exquisite gallery of the arts of that time.

And the queen said she wants rain in the hot summer so the king built the of garden of maids. This small ornamental garden was a popular relaxing spot where royal ladies came for a stroll and hence the name. The garden has many fountains in its four delightful pools, chiseled kiosks and marble elephants. The fountains give the ambiance of rain and the bush under are as lush as ones you saw in the amazon.

Fateh Sagar
A beautiful lake, overlooked by a number of hills on the three sides and the Pratap Memorial on the north was built by Maharana Fateh Singh. In the middle of the lake is Nehru Park-a lovely garden island with a boat shaped café accessible by an enjoyable boat ride. The larger shape of lake resembles the map of India.

Lake Palace
Founded in 1568 by Maharana Udai Singh, the Lake city of Udaipur is often referred as the 'Venice of the East'. Studded with extravagant palaces, hilltop fortresses, awe-inspiring temples and romantic gardens filled with blossoming trees, this 'City of Dreams' is, not surprisingly, a favourite with travellers, both Indian and Foreign. A fantasy island palace shimmering on mirror-calm Lake Pichola, the Lake Palace is one of the most romantic hotels in the world.

Pichhola Lake
The picturesque lake that entranced Maharaja Udai Singh. It was later enlarged by the founder. The lake is surrounded by hills, palaces, temples, bathing ghats and embankments. Two island palaces, Jag Mandir and Jag Niwas(Lake Palace) on the lake are of breathtaking magnificence.
