Umaid Bhavan Palace, Jodhpur

History of Jodhpur
Located at the edge of the Thar Desert, the royal city of Jodupur still echoes with the tales of antiquity. Once the capital of the Marwar state, it was founded in 1459 AD by Rao Jodha- Chief of the Rathod clan of Rajputs. A major trade center of the 16th century AD, the Fortress City of Jodhpur is surrounded by a 10-km long wall that was built about a century after the city was founded.

Mehrangarh Fort
Mehrangarh Fort is the most majestic and one of the largest forts in India. It is 5kms from Jodhpur and it oversees the city from its highest hills. The palace stands imposingly on a perpendicular cliff with steeply scraped walls. The palace houses a museum of musical instrument and war fare in the same premises. The museum also gives an insight to the life style of nobles of that period. Fateh Pol (meaning Gate of Conquest) provides the West entry and Jai Pol (meaning Gate of Victory) the Northeastern entry. The walls of the fort preserve cannon balls fired by enemies to narrate its war history. Another moving memorabilia on its walls are the palm prints of women who immolated themselves with their dead husbands in a custom called Sati.

Umaid Bhavan Palace
Umaid Palace stands 2 kms from Jodhpur and is one the world’s biggest palaces built in twentieth century. The Palace was started as project to provide employment to famine stricken farmers. The palace which is designed by architects HO Lancaster and JR Lodge, stands on 26 acres of land out which 15 acres is gardens. The palace has European interiors and most modern facilities. It also provides central air conditioning. It also has in the underground a swimming pool. This sand stone façade building, now houses the erstwhile ruler of Jodhpur, a Five Star Deluxe Hotel and a Museum.

Mandore Garden
Mandore Garden is located where the old capital of Marwar State was. The site has well manicured gardens and lush green trees. The highpoint of the garden is life like sculptures of Gods and Goddess and heroes of Folklore housed in cenotaphs. The spot has some excellent picnic spots and cafes too.
